Wellpath Founder and CEO Sentenced for Fraud

Wellpath founder, Gerard "Jerry" Boyle, was sentenced for fraud in February 2022, after pleading guilty in October of 2021.  Wellpath is a private company that provides medical services for prisons across the country.   Boyle, who had been previously described as a visionary by Wellpath until his indictment in 2018, has been sentenced to 3 years in prison along with a $35,000 fine.  This fine comes in addition to the $2.7 million he has already forfeited to the federal government.

State governments have turned to private medical providers to cut costs. Contracts are issued through request for proposals, which operate under secret bidding to prevent any one provider from gaining an unfair advantage. Providers are prevented from learning what other providers are bidding. Wellpath, however, was receiving information from former Sheriff Bob McCabe about what other providers were bidding. Wellpath also received help from McCabe in renewing and extending their contracts. This arrangement went on from 2004 to 2016. McCabe has also been sentenced for fraud. During this time, Wellpath made over $1.5 billion in annual revenue.
