Is Private Healthcare for Jails Better?
Private Healthcare Providers cost more for the public and are less safe for inmates. Private Healthcare Providers exist as a business to make money. And according to Todd Murphy, the director of business development for the Private Healthcare Provider Correctional Medical Group Companies, Inc. (CMGC), business is "terrific." CMGC is the largest Private Healthcare Provider for jails in California and also operates in Texas.
CMGC admits that it is not usually cheaper than Public Healthcare in jails, but it claims that it is a better service for inmates. However, according to the California Department of Justice, the death rate in jails that use CMGC is 13% higher compared to other jails in the state. CMGC is facing a class-action lawsuit for safety violations and has already made a preliminary agreement to pay a multi-million-dollar settlement.
Despite the safety concerns and higher price, counties are still happy to hire private healthcare providers. Because the companies are private, the county has greater protection from lawsuits. CMGC admits that this protection is a key reason counties seek CMGC's services. Private healthcare providers provide unsafe medical care and cost the taxpayers more, all to protect counties from the legal consequences of maintaining unsafe jails.
